Chess Set

Every city has a place were chess players gather. Toronto’s chess central is Queen and Victoria. We propose that this be the site for a combined chess competition between Toronto and Chicago which includes a rather impressive art display of bike stand sculptures that form a chess set.

We propose that Toronto attempt to join with it’s sister city Chicago in the following proposal:

Both Cities have a City-wide competition for the two best artistic chess set designs. A set may be made up of designs from different artists. The chess set below can be used as an example and a stimulus for artists in both countries. The chosen bike stand chess sets, once built, will then be played by four chess masters, two from each country.

For the chess match the bike stands will have an attachment to them which allows them to roll and be locked in place. Toronto’s black set of sculptures will travel to Chicago where one of our best chess players plays one of their best. Similarly the U.S. sends its black set of bike stand sculptures to play Toronto’s white set.

This could happen simultaneously, but it is usually a good experience for people to travel to cities in different countries, so if possible it should happen on different days.

It is always exciting to interact with people from other countries, whether you win or loose in a competition. To broaden the experience a team of chess players could be sent with the bike stand chess sculptures to play in a large chess tournament in the sister city.

This festival will put Canada on the map for both chess and artistic innovation. We could invite chess masters, artists and visitors from other countries. With the proper planning it could become a tourist attraction.

At the end of the game, the sets are placed in the ground and are functional as bike stands and a reminder of good relations between the two cities. Both Cities will have the white set from their own artist or artists, and a black set from the visiting city.

Bicycles are the future; there use is a plus to the environment, they provide exercise and transportation. The chess sculptures will honor cycling, reflecting in their artistry and function both beauty and intelligence.

Funding:

Corporations, individuals and institutions can fund one of the pieces. I suspect that your church would be happy to get some of your parishioners to design and fund one or more of the bishops.

Respectfully Yours
